6 is the Magic Number

I am often asked How many teeth should I restore for a smile make over? Our answer is always It depends… but we do have strong opinions on what works best. We have seen success with 2, 4, 8 or 10 for a smile, but rarely with 6.

The number 6 has become our magic number, the number we have strong opinions against. When porcelain veneers became more common, when the technology got good enough to allow us to focus on people’s smiles, six was a common number to restore. What we found was a dramatic distraction these smiles became. Rather than enhance someone’s appearance, we created smiles that stuck out.

By doing more, typically 8 or 10 teeth (normally we take a photo and evaluate how many teeth show when a person smiles), we can create a smile that compliments a person’s face. Normally when restoring a smile people wish to lighten the color of their teeth. If a person chooses to do 2 or 4 teeth, then we must keep the teeth the same color. There is nothing wrong with this, but it usually is a compromise in the result.
