Dental Crowns Restore Health and Beauty

Crowns can be one of the most beautiful restorations that you can have. When Dr. Timmerman’s skilled hands help craft them, crowns can enhance the way your teeth look when you’re smiling. Not only do they keep your teeth healthier, but they can also boost your self-confidence and help you feel at ease when you’re around other people.

Crowns are full-coverage restorations that are used to protect and repair badly damaged teeth. Dr. Timmerman typically places crowns on teeth that:

  • Have been treated with a root canal
  • Have large, failing restorations that need to be replaced
  • Are fractured or broken due to trauma
  • Show areas of extreme wear
  • Are being replaced with dental implants

Crowns are sometimes called “caps.” They cover the entire tooth above the gum line if the tooth has been damaged by decay, a large crack, or has had root canal treatment done. Dr. Timmerman uses porcelain materials in his crowns, allowing him to provide a strong yet aesthetically-friendly restoration. In addition to full porcelain crowns, we also offer full gold crowns when necessary. Gold has some advantages, especially if used on a back tooth that experiences a severe amount of pressure day after day.

Putting off treatment for your broken tooth will only allow it to continue breaking. At some point, it will be too compromised to continue functioning any longer. Placing a full crown on the tooth will allow Dr. Timmerman to restore strength, function, and aesthetics to your smile. If your crown is porcelain, we will use detailed color-matching systems to ensure that your final restoration blends right in with your other teeth.

Digital Impressions & State of the Art Technology

Dentist and patient looking at digital impressions

Dr. Timmerman uses the latest technology when treating patients, including DIGITAL DENTAL IMPRESSIONS. Traditional methods use a gooey material in a tray, but since the goal is to eventually REMOVE the tray, flexibility is designed into the material. After this material sets, plaster is poured into the impression, however, if too much powder or too much liquid is used, the stone will expand or contract unpredictably. This leads to crowns that do not fit precisely, so regular dentists spend a lot of time polishing and adjusting the crowns to try to get them to fit.

With the iTero system, on the other hand, Dr. Timmerman simply emails the scanning data to a lab, a block of porcelain is selected and then milled to the PRECISE shape of the prepared tooth. The lab technician then creates a dental crown, and little to ZERO adjusting will be needed.

Your treatment will take two appointments. During the first visit, the tooth will be prepped and an impression taken so that the customized crown can be made. A temporary crown will be placed over the tooth until you come back. In about 2 weeks, your permanent crown is ready for delivery. Dr. Timmerman will remove your temporary crown and permanently bond the final crown in place.

Once your crown is placed, it’s important to take extra care of it by brushing along the gum line and flossing it at least once each day. Routine cleanings will also help prevent problems like gum disease from developing around your investment! Be sure to visit our Seattle dental office at least twice a year for professional cleanings and an exam by Dr. Timmerman to ensure the ongoing health of your smile.
