Gum Recontouring

Gum Recontouring

Frame your smile with a beautiful gum line.

A Smart Way to Enhance Seattle Smiles

Gingival recontouring is a treatment method that addresses uneven, bulky gum tissues, giving a beautiful gumline that looks natural. People with this problem typically describe it as a “gummy smile” or having short teeth. In reality, it is usually just an excessive amount of gum tissue that is covering their natural tooth enamel.

By adjusting the contour of the gumlines, teeth can appear fuller and more uniform in size. Gumlines are more even, and smiles look more beautiful. We often recommend gum recontouring in conjunction with some of our other cosmetic procedures to enhance your results. This gentle procedure produces noticeable differences in the depth of your gum tissues and is essentially painless.

Pain Free Laser Recontouring

Most of the gum recontouring that Dr. Timmerman provides in our Tukwila cosmetic dental office is done with a laser.Laser recontouring takes just a few minutes to complete and doesn’t leave patients with any discomfort or recovery time needed.

Gummy smiles can leave a patient self-conscious about the way their smile looks. Gummy smiles are usually only caused by excessive tissue or a misalignment of the teeth.

When a significant amount of gum tissue is visible, it doesn’t mean that it’s difficult to correct. Our pain-free laser gum recontouring is simple and doesn’t require any recovery time.

“I use only the latest technology for the treatment of “gummy smiles” We use high tech lasers, rather than painful methods that involve cutting and suturing. Our lasers take just a few minutes to recreate the contour of your natural gum tissue. There is no pain or discomfort since we use a local anesthetic to numb the area being treated. The results are remarkable”

Dilantin Hyperplasia and Side Effects from Medication

Another common issue is prescription medication. Certain medications will cause the gum tissues to grow in a puffy or “fuller” look. Even after “trimming back” the tissues, the gums will continue to grow and the need to reduce will return. This becomes a matter of routine, one learns they simply need to have the gums contoured “every couple years” (frequency varies).

Osseous Crown Lengthening

In some cases, it is not JUST gums that is the issue, but the bone underneath. If the gums are removed, and ONLY the gums, then they will grow back quickly. This is due to the fact that the gums will always be at LEAST a certain distance from where the bone is. There is a minimum thickness. If bone is a factor, then treatment is a bit more involved and recovery is longer. However, the difference is minor and should not discourage treatment.

"Lastly, If you are in pain or afraid of the dentist, Dr. Timmerman will do everything he can take make you comfortable and take care of the issue. I feel lucky to have found such a great dentist and dental staff!!!”
